Mind The Gap!

sunny 71 °F

This morning we enjoyed a meal with traditional English toast at Dillon's Bed and Breakfast before wasting our time asking 100 Brits how to catch the bus that would take us to downtown London. None of them knew what our directions were saying...Thanks mapquest! About an hour later, a nice English gentleman informed us that not only would we save time, but money to mind the gap and ride the London Underground. So we purchased a 6 pound zone pass that would allow us to travel on the Tube all day. We arrived at our first destination, Parliament and Westminster Abbey. At the Abbey, we learned all about the history of British Royalty, saw their burial monuments, and came across the memorial/burial sites of Shakespeare, Dickens, and Kippling. While we were there, we were excited to find teaching materials to bring back to help us create enhanced lessons for our students, including a list of Shakespeare's insults (i.e. "Better a witty fool than a foolish wit" - 12th - Night). Next we journeyed to St. Paul's Cathedral, where Ebeneezer Scrooge celebrated his newly transformed self. Then we spent the remainder of the day traveling around to various London sites. We ended our day by enjoying a traditional English fish and chips dinner. Tomorrow we are picking up our European rental car and driving to Stratford-upon-Avon. Wish us luck!

Arrived...Exhausted/Slightly Delirious...

So, after an hour delay in Houston, we finally arrived at 7:45a.m. Got very little sleep on the plane, but I must say it was the nicest plane I have ever been on. There were TVs in each headrest which allowed you to choose the movie, game, music, or TV show you wished to view/listen to. We paid more than I ever thought possible for a cab ride to Hampstead...85 pounds which is the equivalent of $152. Finally arrived at Dillon's Bed and Breakfast and almost died climbing 5 flights of stairs, as we were extremely delirious and laughing hysterically while trying to carry all our luggage upstairs. We then proceeded to walk/trek to Camden Town and Market, went the wrong way and turned a 30 minute walk into an hour and fifteen minutes, and bartered for presents with Trisha's hugs and kisses (she turned down the man's offer and we ran out the store). Oh...we can't forget the downpour that met us as we began to walk back to our hotel. Houston...we are sending it your way...All said and done, it has been a great day so far. We saw some of the coolest shops, drank middle-of-the-market-modern-hypie-wing-it-smell-the-coffee-before-you-drink-it iced lattes, and were asked to comfort some creepy homeless men who were lonely and hanging out along the Camden Locks....What will tomorrow hold?

England Bound!

In just a couple of hours we will be on our way to the George Bush Intercontinental Airport to depart to London, England! Although my excitement to go is overwhelming, I am somewhat nervous about the long flight. I'm not so keen on the thought of flying over the Atlantic, however, I have flown from Chicago, IL to Hawaii and it wasn't really that bad. My anxiety and excitement kept me up most of the night and I was up at 4 a.m. to tell Cody goodbye, so perhaps I will be able to sleep on the plane and not have to worry about my nerves. Maybe if I can't sleep they will be playing a descent movie that I can watch. Airplane movies are usually pretty bad though, which reminds me that they will be serving us dinner on the plane. I wonder what kind of food they will give us?...hopefully something edible! I don't consider myself a picky eater but members of my family would probably beg to differ lol. Anyways I better get going...Tammy and Justin are picking me up soon and I need to finish getting ready to go! When I post again we will be in England! It still seems unreal to me...but I cannot wait for us to get there! Goodbye Texas! See you in 2 weeks!

Departing Tomorrow

82 °F

Tomorrow we will be departing from George Bush International and heading for London Heathrow. Though I am truly excited, I can definitely state that I am also nervous. I am not a big fan of flying, and more importantly not a fan of the 50 lb. bag weight limit. Really Continental? You expect me to fit two weeks worth of clothes in one bag and have it weigh under fifty pounds? I will forever claim that I am not an "over-packer," my clothes just weight a lot...lol. Anyway, I will be posting tons of pictures whenever we find Wi-fi, so check back regularly.

Will definitely miss you Justin!!! I'll bring you back a souvenir. At least you now have an I-Pad to keep you company...j/k
